If you've spent much time on this site you know I don't endorse many products but I found one that I really like and was pleased when it exceeded my expectations. I think this is a great affordable product that every coach would want to use as part of their practices.
You can think of the Quick Hitter as a replacement for your soft-toss stations. It's a light weight pole that has tongs on the end to pick up a baseball and a handle at the other end to control the tongs and allow you to pick up the baseball and release it when dropping or tossing the baseball.
Simply put, I've found the Quick Hitter to provide better batting practice than soft-toss. The big advantage is the ball is delivered out in front of the plate. Instead of being thrown in from an angle and coming across the plate as it is in soft-toss, the ball is dropped in or tossed out in front of the plate. This allows a hitter to work on developing a quick, compact swing. With soft-toss the angle of the pitch will often result in a hitter looping the swing to get the bat head around a pitch that comes from the outside in. The Quick Hitter solves this problem by keeping the ball out front.
The Quick Hitter also works on developing a quick swing by having the hitter react to the ball. Because of the angle of the pitch, soft-toss requires the hitter to time the motion of the person tossing the ball. This also allows a hitter to time for a flaw in their swing including a hitch or a slow looping swing. With the Quick Hitter the player must react to the ball. This helps a player get to the launch position and then swing compact and quick from that position or they won't be successful hitting the ball.
The Quick Hitter allows a hitter to work on hitting pitches in particular zone becuase it's simple to provide the same pitch over and over. Try working on an inside fastball with soft-toss. It's not easy to deliver a pitch in the correct area, not to mention repeating that over and over.
Unless you have an screen setup for your soft-toss station, the Quick Hitter is much safer for the person running the drill. They can deliver the pitch out in front of the hitter while staying safely on the side.
